Inspiration Comes From Screenwriting Friends

1 July 2009 4 Comments

Today I spoke with two good friends — one of which I’m working with on a project for ScribblePlay and the other who aspires to be a director. I noticed that as I spoke with them about various projects, classic films, and friends’ projects in the works, I felt incredibly inspired to go out there and get some work done.

I realized that regardless of how many connections and how much luck you have as a screenwriter, you won’t be able to hack it unless you have some talent and a few friends you can count on to understand your situation, what you’re working on, what you’re passionate about, and where you’re coming from.

Why?

Because unless you have someone to bounce ideas back and forth with, you’ll be stretched for fresh inspiration and stuck with a single perspective, which can lead to stale ideas.

If you feel like your inspiration needs a boost, consider meeting up with a pal and talk story. This always gets me excited because by sharing your ideas and thoughts, you’re enabling another point of view and perspective to jump in and share their views and ideas with you.

It’s important to stay inspired when aspiring to create art and build a career in an industry where everyone’s flying blind.

If you’re still not inspired, check out the 10 Ways to Find Screenplay Ideas.

I always wanted to talk about my story with friends…but seriously, from where I am I don’t have any friends who ever had the interest to read or write anything…they just only like to go out and eat and drink and party, to have a good time. I know this is good…but for me I’m just so sick of it because I always look forward to find somebody that I could share my story with, or bounce ideas with.
I’m in Thailand now, and writing is just not as that popular I guess in the States. Screenwriting isn’t so much of a respected career, nor is it ever thought about by film makers here. This is why in my idea or dream, I want to be a good screenwriting for future films so that I could show it is an artistic and entertaining craft.
But there’s nobody here that would really care about what I wrote or my story. They wouldn’t even take few minutes just to really listen to you…honestly, I am kind of upset about it. Certainly I do need to talk to somebody just to keep my inspiration going..and I think only on this web I get to do that. All I could do is to keep writing, keep dreamin, keep studying and keep going. It’s really too difficult…
I think your able to bounce off ideas and share your stories until you meet the right people…and I just don’t think I’ve known any body here at all.

Also, I think on the other hand, most of the people are pretty much involved with their own problems and what they have to do for their own life. Normally, some people would think that why should they give their time just to listen to your nonsense stories? I mean, I’m so sick and tired of people who just only want to have a good time and who would NOT at least consider to listen to what you needed to say about your passionate work. But this is the way it is in this world.
Then it gets to you because you would start to believe that you are being really nonsense and unrealistic yourself because of your work. Everybody has a stable and profitable job, and they all believe that money is the number one reason to live life and achieve. And everybody knows that without money you can’t do anything in life. You can’t live the kind of good life you want…
So I felt pretty stupid of myself sometimes…but I chose it anyways because I believe that I can tell stories and it is my talent. It doesn’t matter what people say about me because I know what I have to do for myself. But there’s really nobody that could help me, nor care about what I’m writing about. Instead, it just all depends on me alone, you can see all these people that were your friends, but who has a totally different value than you, and even though you wanted them to help and understand you, but they just don’t. It is pretty confusing and frustrating. The only thing I can do is just to stick to myself..and maybe With YOU GUYS.
I’m not supported by my family about what I want to do…nor supported by anybody that I know because screenwriting is just like something from outer space to them…

Hey. William, its funny running into this – I didn’t expect to have an answer from someone else running in the same direction on a completely different continent, but I too, am having difficulty relating to my friends and my passion. I find that I’m doing a lot of writing, rather than going out- and it is truly difficult finding someone to bounce ideas with, especially on a serious level.
Anyways, I think if you wanted, we could talk and hopefully I could help with your ideas, give you my perspective and vice versa. If that’s cool, whatever-
I think this site is M-Azing. i’m always coming back to it full force, always without a helmet.

whas up J.? sorry to getting back so late I haven’t been checking this web for some days now, but I’m surprised as well to find someone responding to this. And…yeah of course it is very frustrating..because I don’t know how to explain it. But I’m sure you know what it felt like…
Yeah for sure, if there’s anything bothering, or some things that you would like to discuss, I’m down with it. But I was just hoping if its possible to post our thoughts and discussions here on this web? I mean, I’m sure its not just for the benefit of us both, but I think there are many people who have this kind of problem too and would like to discuss about this too…hmm I wonder if Chris has anything thoughts about this?
