13 Screenwriting Blogs I’m Reading
One of the great advantages of the web has been the ability for screenwriters to collect information from a variety of diverse sources – doing so results in a wider, collective perspective as well as a type of group discussion as opposed to a traditional single-perspective source.
With this in mind I thought it would be good to post a few blogs I’ve been reading lately – mostly for screenwriting discussion, tips, inspiration, stories, networking, and everything in-between. Reading a wide variety of information will allow you to make up your own mind regarding theories, such as the capitalization of sound, the demands of professional formatting, and even the one rule of screenwriting on spec.
(organized in no particular order)
Word Play – One of the best resources for screenwriters online – extensive articles from Ted and Terry (Pirates of the Caribbean, Shrek)
Mystery Man On Film – One of the power bloggers in the screenwriting niche – Mystery Man’s work can also be found in Creative Screenwriter and Script Magazine.
Unknown Screenwriter – Great posts and great resources in the scribosphere section of the sidebar.
Screenwriting From Iowa – A refreshing blog full of useful information.
Complications Ensue – A daily blog from Alex Epstein – great for those who like short posts, interviews, and occasional videos.
Go Into the Story – A regularly updated blog from Executive Producer of Distillery Pictures and screenwriting professor at UCLA.
A Storied Career – An interesting new perspective on storytelling from kathy Hansen.
Writing for Performance – A blog from Robin Kelly – Who agrees with Stephen King – “If you want to be a writer, you need to do two things above all else: read a lot and write a lot…”
So Fluid – A regularly updated blog from aspiring screenwriter Michelle Goode – Sharing stories about her trials and tribulations.
Marilyn’s Movie Candy – A blog from Marilyn Horowitz, author of “How to Write a Screenplay in 10 Weeks.”
Screenwriter’s Utopia – An extensive resource for just about all your needs as a screenwriter
The House Next Door - An all in one, film talk blog for every writer.
Screenwriting Goldmine – A nicely designed blog with useful info and quality products.

I’m surprised johnaugust.com isn’t listed here (one of my favorites). It’s well written, personal, and a great collection of information on screenwriting and writing in general.
I should also humbly suggest my own site, StoryFanatic, located at http://storyfanatic.com. I cover structure, theory, writing and analysis.
Hey Jim – John’s definitely one of my favorites as well – so much in fact, I provide a link to his site under the screenwriting resources section in the sidebar.
The sites above are merely what I was reading at the moment – as opposed to a definitive guide to screenwriting blogs and sites, you know?
I’ll be sure to check out your site! Thanks for reading mine!
Hey Christopher — Thanks for the plug for “Screenwriting from Iowa.” It’s nice to be surrounded by such good company.
@Scott
For sure – thanks for sharing your knowledge and thoughts on your blog. Look forward to future posts!

Oh…there it is – all big and prominent in the sidebar, sorry about that!
I’m totally surprised that Blake Snyder’s blog at the Blake Snyder website is not listed. I was at a panel session over the weekend – every agent and manager on the panel touted Save the Cat! as the only structure paradigm to follow!
Hope your fellow writers will check out mine at http://thescreenwritinglife.blogspot.com/ I’m from New York and cover screenwriting from that angle as well as my love for the movie business in general. Blogs offer so much useful information to us writers as well as inspiration when needed.
So sorry to hear about Blake Snyder’s recent passing. He was a great teacher (I took his class in NYC in ‘06). His book Save the Cat helped me with my writing a lot.

Hey Beatrice – I understand how it might seem surprising, but this collection of blogs was merely a few I was reading at that moment.
Blake Snyder provided the community with an amazing new look at the outlining process – and I actually spoke with him not too long ago to express my thanks as a reader.
His book is inspiring, his contribution to the community will be used for years to come, and the community of screenwriters (both pro and aspiring) will miss him greatly.
For an extensive list of the blogs I try to read regularly, check out the column over there –>
