Congrats Lori Othouse! Strongest Story Setup Competition Winner
Last month’s screenplay competition was a definite surprise — not only did the community of writers reading the blog grow tremendously, but there was an awesome turnout of writers that submitted their screenplay.
I’d originally planned on holding monthly competitions, announcing the winner on the last day of the month, and introducing the next … needless to say, I underestimated big time — and understand why some competitions encourage early submissions.
For those that need a quick recap: The screenplay competition held last April (2010) was focused on discovering the writer that proved to be the best at creating a strong story setup for their screenplay. The competition was fierce … I even contemplated announcing a tie, but ultimately decided against it.
There are three winners to this competition, and for now they place equally among each other.
Lori Othouse
Though the competition was tough, Lori demonstrated an exceptionally strong story setup with her submission, Apart From Me, that, like so many of the submissions, left me wanting more!
Keep your eyes peeled for the second and third winners! (Subscribe via email to stay in the loop)
xCoverage
Lori will receive the xCoverage service ($125 value) free and I’ll be making the announcement to the social community of fellow writers on facebook and twitter shortly.
xOne Coverage
I took a lot of notes during the reading of the submissions, so I’ll be going back over them to create the xOne coverage for all participants. Thanks for being so patient — I’m a newbie at this so I really appreciate it. I was hoping to get the xOne coverage reports out to everyone immediately after the announcement of the winner, but just as before, I seriously underestimated my ability.
You live and you learn.
For those that didn’t enter the competition, those that want another shot, or those that to win one of the feature competitions, you’re just in time!
We’re just about half way through May, which is the month hosting the Feature Length Spring Screenplay Competition!

Congratulations to Lori!
Very well done, I hope it brings her to great heights!
If the rest of the screenplay is as solid as the setup, I’m sure it will — she rocked it!
Again, I was really surprised by the quality of all the submissions during the competition — not only were the announced winners awesome, but the majority of the batch really stood out from everything i’ve read up to this point.
Good job Lori! Sounds like you beat out some stiff competition.
Definitely so — and you didn’t make it any easier on me with your solid submission either, Geno!
Great job Lori… this serves as an example for many of us
Eyes still peeled, lol.
Is there any feedback on the ones that did not win? Will we get any info about what we did wrong?
I’ve been sending out the xOne coverage reports for the past two weeks — aiming to have them out before the 31st.
So sorry for the delay — I might need to look for a few helpers during the next competition ::question mark::
Also, is it possible to see the winning entries with comments? I think feedback is the biggest help and reason for entering contests.
I am almost finished with my screenplay but if I am taking a wrong turn, it would help to have feedback. I figure that the notes you made while reading our screenplays would be valuable.
I have shown my screenplay to a number of friends and they were really charged up about the opening scenes. I am trying to make the deadlines of a number of competitions but if I am writing crap, I need to fix it before I enter.
You also said there were a total of three winners. Who are the other two?
Who is Lori? What did she write? How many others were in the competition? Who were the other winners? Did this contest really happen?
I am starting to feel scammed.
John, it’s me, Lori. And, if it might ease your mind a little, I really did submit my first 30 pages of Apart From Me, paid the entry fee and everything that was required. I don’t know the answers to the other questions or why the other winners haven’t been posted yet. Hopefully it’s just some kind of delay and we’ll all know soon!
that’s pretty funny — just saw this comment.
